Machine Knit Mock Seed Stitch Baby Cocoon

This is the 3rd and final baby cocoon that I knitted this weekend for my niece.

This is another tuck stitch pattern which makes a “mock seed stitch”  It is difficult to photograph but you can kind of see it in the contrast in stitch texture between the body and the bottom of the cocoon.

 

Pattern:

Machine Knit Mock Seed Stitch Baby Cocoon

  • Machine: Silver Reed LK-150 or any mid-gauge machine
  • Yarn:  Hobby Lobby Baby Bee Sweet Delight Lime Green – 1 Skein
  • Mast Tension:5 , Stitch Dial: 5

Prepare

  • Cast on 60 stitches (30 L to 30R)
  • Set carriage dial stitch size to 4
  • Knit 2 rows and insert a  lifeline.
  • Hang Cast on Comb / Weight

Side 1 – Ribbing:

  • Knit to row 16
  • Do 3×1 rib by dropping every 4th stitch and latching back up in purl from row 16 down to the lifeline.

Side 1 – Mock Seed Stitch

  • Set carriage dial stitch size to 5
  • Set carriage to NOT knit needles in hold to the left, but plain stockinette to the right.
  • Starting with 2nd needle from left, Pull every other needle out to hold (keeping end needles in work).
  • Knit the left (needles should still be in hold).
  • Knit to the right.  All needles will knit.
  • Pull every other needle out to hold starting with 3rd needle from left (keeping end needles in work).
  • Knit to the left (needles should still be in hold)
  • Knit to the right.  All needles will knit.
  • Keep alternating like this until row 116

Short Rows

  • Set carriage stitch dial size to 4
  • Set carriage to NOT knit needles in hold in both directions.
  • Divide # needles by 3.   Short row until 1/3 of the needles are in work and 2/3 are in hold.
  • Then reverse short row until all needles are back in work.

Side 2 – Mock Seed Stitch:

  • Reset counter
  • Set Carriage stitch dial size back to 5
  • Set carriage to not knit needles in hold to the left / plain stockinette to the right.
  • Repeat mock seed stitch pattern until row 100
  • At row 100 insert a lifeline.

Side 2- Ribbing

  • Set Carriage Stitch dial to 4
  • Knit 14 rows.
  • Drop every 4th stitch and latch back up in purl stitch down to the lifeline.
  • Knit 2 rows and cast off.

Finishing

  • Mattress Stitch up both sides
  • If desired, add 1 to 2 rows single crochet across the top
